Faith at Holy Names

Rooted in tradition, open to all

A woman of faith

Our belief

Whatever her religion, a woman of faith lives by the rule all faiths share: love thy neighbor, and treat others as you would like to be treated. Our students embody compassion and respect, and work toward a future of love, equity, and justice.

The SNJM tradition

Our heritage

Holy Names stands in the tradition of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, who foster the full development of each person and educate in the faith. We share their values of:

  • Hospitality
  • Dedication to women and children
  • Dedication to justice
  • Service to people who are poor and marginalized

Curriculum

Theology courses

Each year our faculty review texts and source materials so students see themselves and their experiences reflected in what they study, including the voices of the People of the Global Majority.

Social justice · Since 1868

Noblesse Oblige

The Sisters founded Holy Names in 1868 to give young women access to education and to improve lives through knowledge and the promotion of justice. Our motto carries that calling forward: generations of graduates have answered it by serving others and working for equity.

Service Learning

Twice a year

Twice a year, students work off campus with a nonprofit or alongside marginalized and disadvantaged communities. Students choose the program after learning about local challenges with Campus Ministry.
