Service Learning
Holy Names High School continues its original mission to educate young women to be leaders in a society in need of transformation where they can witness the Gospel, respond to the needs of the poor and address urgent global issues. The service-learning program offers students opportunities to awaken social awareness, to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to respond to issues of justice and peace, to reach out in interaction with the poor, to care for the environment, and to interact with peers in other cultural contexts, reflecting on these experiences in a faith context. Service-Learning experiences are integrated into the Religious Studies curriculum. Each student must follow the Service-Learning curriculum for her grade level.

12th Grade
Freshwomen will learn about environmental issues and develop a plan for responsible care of God’s creation on the personal, familial and community levels.
Sophomores will explore the causes and challenges of homelessness in the Bay Area, and apply the Catholic Social Teaching of dignity and respect for persons through a one-day service project at St. Anthony Foundation.

Juniors will have the opportunity to participate in the Cyber Bridges Program that employs information technology to connect American high school students with their counterparts in other countries. Students engage in dialogue, information sharing, collaborative activities, training and projects that work towards a shared vision of social justice and peace.
The 12th Grade Service-Learning experience is tied to the class: Social Justice. It is a capstone experience where students work at a local agency and integrate their experiences with their classroom studies on Catholic Social Teaching and other principles of justice. The course will require that a student spend at least 15 hours in service at an agency in the community as part of her study.

FAQs
Will my daughter still required to complete twenty hours of service each year?
All students are responsible for completing their 20 hours of service for each year she has attended HNHS prior to Fall 2008. If your daughter still has hours to complete she must do so this summer and turn in a service verification form to Ms. Creson in August, 2008. Beginning Fall, 2008, Service-Learning requirements will be fulfilled within the Religious Studies curriculum.
Will my daughter still be required to fill out the Service Verification form?
There will be no service verification form required for the new Service-Learning Program.
What agency should my daughter work at for her Senior Service-Learning project?
Hours must be completed at an agency that provides direct service to traditionally poor and/or marginalized people. You must complete your hours at an HNHS Approved Agency. If your desired agency is not on the list, please submit a completed proposal form to get the agency approved. You must submit for approval before beginning work at your agency.
