| 9th Grade - Transitioning to High School |
The counseling office assists freshwomen in making the transition from middle school to high school. Sessions are conducted on time management, goal setting, values clarification, sexuality and safety. |

10th Grade - Career Exploration |
During the sophomore year, students begin to focus on their career interests. The counselors use the results of the ACT PLAN Test, taken in October, when conducting a three week career unit. Students complete exercises from The Career Game and Red Hot Jobs and conclude the unit with a research project and a class presentation on a chosen career. In addition, sophomores receive an overview of the college admissions process and have the opportunity to participate in the California College Tour during offered during spring break. |

| 11th Grade - Project Chrysalis |
Juniors spend four weeks developing their individual college plans. Students research colleges and the major fields of study offered via print material and the internet. They learn to find appropriate scholarships, to write college essays, how to fill out applications, etc. At the end of the unit, students produce a project which includes a synthesis of their research, a college essay, and a completed college application. All juniors take the PSAT in October. |

12th - Beyond HNHS: College Selection and Application |
During the fall college application process, seniors use the skills learned in the previous years to narrow their college choices and ultimately complete their applications. The English Department works with students on the college essay. The Counseling Department provides workshops on completing the University of California and California State University applications, helps students identify and apply for scholarships, coordinates visits from college representatives and acts as a liaison between the students and the colleges. |
